Giuliano Avella – My Story

“Integrity is the essence of everything successful.” – R. Buckminster Fuller

My program is called the Avella method in honor of my father. He was a person who had a philosophy of life that separated him from his peers. He was a man of integrity. He bravely fought cancer two separate times in his life, but unfortunately lost his second battle at the age of 68. At my father’s wake, there were over 1000 people that came to pay their respects for a long shoreman who lived a simple life.
In death he taught me what the true meaning of success was. It wasn’t how much money you made, the type of job you had, how big your house was, or the car you drove. True success was being universally loved and respected, regardless of your status or job title in life. True success was being remembered for always doing the right thing by your friends, family, and community. To be remembered as a reliable person, a person who speaks the truth, a person who’s willing to help those in need, a person who stands up when he sees something isn’t right. True success is about being a man of integrity in every sense of the word.
He may not have been a rich man financially, but he was one of the wealthiest people I knew. Measuring success, the way that my father lived his life, made me realize anyone can live a life of virtue, integrity and excellence. Anyone can live “the good life”.
A year after losing the most important Man in my life, my sister’s husband died tragically at the age of 35. I don’t even like to refer to him as my brother-in-law because in truth he was more like a brother to me. Before my father passed away, I was blessed to have three of the best male role models by my side. My dad, my older brother, and my sister’s husband. Each one of them taught me different things in life, but the common lessons all focused on how to be a man of integrity. This was done through their actions, not words. I’m still lucky enough to have my brother in my life who continues to be a positive influence, and although my brother-in-law and my dad are no longer physically here with me, they continue to teach me how to be a better person, and in some ways even more so in death than in life.
Experiencing those two events in the span of one year changed my perspective on life forever. It was the first time our tight knit family experienced true suffering and tragedy.
For as long as I could remember, I’ve been a student of self-development. I’ve read countless books on the subject since my late teens. Reading helped me get over depression as a young man by learning about adapting different mindsets. I was hooked the moment I saw that by applying ideas from books, you can improve the quality of your life dramatically. That the practical education needed in life wasn’t taught in schools, but had to be self-taught.
It was from these two tragedies that I realized all the books I’ve read in the past regarding self-development, spirituality and ancient philosophies all had tools that I was able to apply to help me and my family get through the most difficult period in our lives. It gave me the clarity to take things back to the basics, not to overcomplicate things, and that we didn’t have to suffer needlessly. That by accepting what had happened in our lives, it made the suffering bearable, and that there was still a way to experience joy and happiness regardless of life’s trials.
It also taught me an important lesson, that you can use grief as a springboard to growth.
Two months after my brother-in-law passed, my wife gave birth to our first of two kids. Not only did i have to navigate the grief I was experiencing, but I also had to be there for my mother, my sister, her two young boys who now lost their dad, and take care of a newborn. The wisdom I’ve acquired from all the books I’ve read gave me the strength and perspective to be able to be a person of service for everyone in my inner circle. It gave me the tools necessary to balance my time effectively by not only taking care of my entire family, but myself as well.
I was amazed with the fact that if you adopt the right mindset, life’s biggest obstacles can become one of the greatest vehicles for transformative growth. You can find a new purpose in life, and operate from a place of power, instead of feeling like a victim to the world. I was effectively implementing time saving strategies from books I’ve read, which allowed me to be there for everyone important in my life, maintain a work life balance, and maintain my self-care by going to the gym and meditating every day.
Once I saw that I was able to ease the suffering of those around me by teaching them tools that I’ve picked up over the years, I wanted to help others not only cope with grief in a better way, but to try and find more fulfillment in life. I came across a coaching program called optimize, which was a one-year coach certification program. Of all the programs I looked into, it resonated with me the most because of their basis in combining the teachings of ancient philosophies and modern science to help people truly become the best version of themselves.
After I got my Optimize Coach certification, I began to cultivate my own philosophy, which combines the best from ancient wisdom, modern science, my own personal experiences, and the lessons I learned from my father.
And after going through all these experiences, I had a light bulb moment.
You could read all the books, listen to all the lectures, watch all the videos, but until you start approaching your mindset as a daily philosophy that you follow, it will never stick. With the millions of different books, videos, methodologies, gurus that all have their tips, methods, systems, protocols and life hacks to follow we feel overwhelmed trying to figure out what the right thing to do is. We end up overcomplicating what we think we need to do to find fulfillment and happiness. We overcomplicate what we think we need to do to be more successful, what we need to do to be healthy. We overcomplicate everything!
This is why I created the Avella method. I’ve realized through my own experience that you really can simplify self-development. That by sticking to the basics, being consistent on the fundamentals, and by following a personal philosophy, you can live a life of fulfillment and happiness. By living with virtue, the happiness and fulfillment we are looking for becomes a byproduct of living a life of integrity.
The Avella method is made to help people create a solid foundation that will allow them to experience happiness and fulfillment today! Not “tomorrow” or “someday”. It will give you the tools needed to tackle each day effectively. To help you achieve the mindset needed to be mentally resilient in a time where it seems like the world is heading downhill. To effectively tackle life’s challenges as they come, and not only survive, but thrive. To become antifragile, where life’s challenges don’t hurt us, but make us stronger.
We want to help you achieve long-term success, not just temporary fixes. By incorporating virtues and creating a personal philosophy, you will be able to make sustainable changes that will improve your overall quality of life in every area.
To live a life of fulfillment!
To live a life of integrity!
